When you have purchased your new baby chinchilla email me if you have any questions, concerns or if you just want an update on how they are doing. I will keep updating this web page with pictures and information on your new chin baby until they are weaned and you can pick them up. I wean the babies at 6 weeks and 200 grams. Then I monitor them in their own cage to make sure they are eating and drinking well on their own and continuing to gain weight. After that they can go to their new home at 9 to 12 weeks of age and 300 grams. Babies from large litters will usually take the full 12 weeks before they are ready.
Chinchillas come with a pedigree, a care package of pellets, alfalfa blocks, loose timothy hay, bath dust and supplement. Price also includes a care booklet, 1 year membership to the chinchilla club and a Pet carrier!
A 50% minimum deposit is required to place a baby chinchilla on hold. Deposit is non refundable unless the chinchilla is unavailable due to injury, death, etc. If chinchilla becomes unavailable you will receive a refund of your deposit or a credit towards another chinchilla (customer's choice).
Full payment on a baby must be received by the time they are 12 weeks old and is to be received and cleared before the pick-up or delivery of the chinchilla. We accept paypal, money orders and cash.
It is always better, for the happiness of your chinchilla, to buy them in pairs. They love to cuddle and nap with each other. They love to have their face groomed by another chinchilla. You can tell by the way they close their eyes and lift their head up when another chin is grooming them. In the wild they live together. At night when they are up playing around and you're sleeping they need a playmate. They love to use each other as pillows because their fur is so soft and they keep each other toasty warm. They handle a new environment and stress much better with a buddy. For these reasons from now on when you buy 2 chinchillas the second one will be 10% off. I care about my animals and want them to be healthy and happy.
It is easiest to put 2 babies together that are siblings of the same sex or babies that were weaned together in the same cage that are the same sex. If you are buying a buddy to pair with a chin you already have you must do the 1 week introductory period; in separate cages side by side for atleast a week before you put them together. Then put them in a freshly cleaned caged with clean cage accessories. They must be in an area where you can keep and eye on them to make sure they are getting along. It's best to pair chinchillas together that are similar in size.
Do not buy a chinchilla that is under 8 weeks of age. Some babies are still nursing at up to 6 weeks of age. After weaning at 6 weeks they need to be monitored for a minimum of 2 more weeks to make sure they are doing well on their own and continuing to gain weight. Remember these are babies and need to be treated as such. They need naps and breaks in between play time and being held. They need to stay strictly on chinchilla food and distilled water.
Do not put a female younger than 8 months with a male. They can not play together until she is atleast 8 months old. She can get pregnant in a split second, which at too young of an age can cause death, sterility, stunted growth, and unhealthy or still born babies
Colors of babies: any babies that are born mosaic (white and grey, white and ebony, tan and white) will sometimes start out darker patterned, but as the babies grow the white areas of the pattern get larger making the baby not as darkly patterned with more areas white. Tans can take 18 months to reach their full darkness of color. They are born lighter and then darken as they age. Some are born a medium tan and then will lighten to their tail color. Ebonies seem to take longer to reach their full size; up to 2 years where as other colors take only 1 year. Sapphires are usually smaller in size compared to the other colors
*TOV or Touch of Velvet in the description refers to a more dramatic pattern in the color of a chinchilla; darker top, medium sides and a lighter or white belly. On white chinchillas the TOV can produce beautiful dramatic patterns of white, grey and black especially on the face. Many times a TOV will have a darker stripe on each paw. * A carrier gives you more possible breeding outcomes. For example if you breed a standard that is a sapphire carrier to another color that is also a sapphire carrier the mating could result in sapphire babies. If you breed a violet ebony carrier to another violet or violet carrier the mating could result in violets or violet wraps (one of my favorites; a beautiful solid deep rich violet grey all over including the belly) Breeding with ebonies can give you darker colors, darker patterns and solid color results called wraps. If an animal is a TOV or Touch of Velvet, and you breed it with another color it could result in TOV offspring. A black velvet is actually a TOV standard. A brown velvet is a TOV beige. A TOV White also called a black white cross is from a white and a black velvet. Black refers to Black Velvets not Ebonies.
ANY BABIES THAT COME FROM AN EBONY MATING WILL USUALLY HAVE A DARKER BELLY.
FOR EXAMPLE A BLACK VELVET EBONY CARRIER WILL HAVE A LITTLE MORE GREY CAST TO THEIR BELLY INSTEAD OF A SOLID WHITE BELLY.
DO NOT PUT A BABY CHINCHILLA IN A CAGE TALLER THAN 2 FEET HIGH. THEY CAN FALL AND INJURE THEMSELVES.
BE CAREFUL IF YOU LET YOUR CHIN ROLL AROUND IN A PLASTIC BALL. THEY DO NOT GET GOOD AIR CIRCULATION AND CAN BECOME OVER HEATED.
NO SUPPLEMENT FOR BABIES. ONLY 1/2 tsp PLAIN OLD FASHIONED ROLLED OATS
